About MKV files

MKV (Matroska) is a container that can hold almost any picture and sound, with several sound tracks and subtitles in one file. Recording apps like OBS can save it, and many movie files come as MKV.

MKV opens in Chrome and Edge on a computer and in Chrome on Android. iPhones and iPads can't open MKV files in the browser (every browser there runs on Safari's engine), so convert those on a computer or an Android phone.

Movie MKVs often carry Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus or DTS sound, which browsers can't decode. When the file also has a stereo track in AAC, Opus or MP3, Extractune uses that one; when it hasn't, it tells you which format it found.

How do I convert MKV to MP3?

My MKV has more than one audio track. Which one do I get?

The main one, the track a video player starts with. If that one is in a format the browser can't decode, the first track it can is used instead.
