Key and BPM finder
Finds the tempo and key. Play it slower or in another key.
How it works
- 01
Drop the song in
A song or a video with it in, up to 10 minutes. It plays right there, and nothing is uploaded.
- 02
Read the tempo and key
The BPM and the key show in a few seconds. When a song could be read two ways, it says probably and shows the other answer too.
- 03
Use them
Open the metronome at that tempo, change the key, or copy both. For a closer read, split the song and it reads the drums and the instruments on their own.
What people use it for
- Set a metronome or a DAW project to a song's tempo.
- Find the key to play or sing along in.
- Pick songs that mix well together for a DJ set.
- Check a song's tempo before slowing it down to practise.
Questions
How accurate is it?
It does best on songs with a steady beat and clear chords, like most pop, rock, hip-hop and electronic music. Songs that speed up and slow down, and classical or solo pieces played freely, are harder; then it says probably, or that it couldn't find a steady tempo. Splitting the song first often makes it surer.
What does BPM mean?
Beats per minute: how many beats, the pulse you'd tap your foot to, fit in a minute. 120 BPM is two beats a second.
Why does it sometimes show half or double the tempo?
A beat can be counted at two speeds: a song at 70 BPM can feel like 140 if you count the hi-hats. When both fit, it gives the likelier one and shows the other next to it. Use the one you'd tap along to.
What's a relative key?
Every major key shares its notes with a minor key, its relative: C major and A minor use the same seven notes. That makes the two easy to mix up, so when they're close it shows the other one too.
Is my song uploaded?
No. It's opened and read in your browser, and the file never leaves your device.
