How to find a song's tempo by tapping

  1. 1

    Play the song

From any speaker. Nothing listens: you do the counting.

  2. 2

    Tap on every beat

Tap the button, or press T, along with the kick drum or the beat you'd clap to. Four taps give a first reading; eight make it steady.

  3. 3

    Press play

The metronome takes the tapped tempo. Pause for two seconds and the next tap starts a new count.

Questions

Does the click stay in time?

Yes. Every click is booked ahead on the browser's audio clock, the one music apps use, so it doesn't drift when the page is busy, and it keeps going when you switch to another tab.

How does tap tempo work out the BPM?

It takes the middle value of the gaps between your last eight taps, so one early or late tap doesn't throw it off. A tap far off the others starts a new tempo, and a two-second pause starts a new count.

Which time signatures can it play?

2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 12/8, with the accents where each is usually counted (8/8 as 3+3+2), or any number of beats from 1 to 16. Tap a beat to make it an accent, a normal click or silent.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. Tap and Play sit at the bottom of the screen, within reach of your thumb, and the screen stays on while it plays where the browser allows it.

What's the speed trainer for?

Learning a hard passage. It starts below the tempo you're aiming for and adds a few BPM every few bars until it gets there. Extractune's studio does the same on a loop of the real song.

Does it use my microphone or send anything?

No. The 8 sounds are made in your browser, from 30 to 300 BPM, and nothing is recorded, uploaded or saved.
