What comes out, and how long it takes
On a computer, and on phones with enough memory, the song is split into voice, drums, bass and other with HTDemucs; the instrumental is drums, bass and other together. Measured on visitors' own devices between 29 September to 30 October 2026, a 3-minute song takes about 1 minute on a computer with a graphics chip (190 splits) and about 4½ minutes on a phone with one (65 splits). Without a graphics chip the limit is 2 minutes, so a 3-minute song is too long.
Phones with 4 GB of memory or less, and iPhones, use a lighter engine (Open-Unmix) so the split can finish. It makes voice and music only, at lower quality, and the page says "Fast mode" while it runs. "Use full quality" tries HTDemucs anyway, which may not finish on that phone.
On a phone, a song over 40 seconds that would take a minute or more offers "Split the first 30 s" or "Split the whole song", so you can hear a result sooner.
A minute of sound is about 2.4MB as MP3, 1.0MB as WebM and 5.8MB (mono) to 11.5MB (stereo) as WAV, so a 3-minute MP3 is around 7MB. Choose WAV if you will edit it again.
The vocal comes out whole, not word by word, and faint traces can stay where the singer is loud or drenched in reverb; backing vocals usually go with the lead. Listen before you download. The first split saves the engine (about 90MB) to your browser once, so use Wi-Fi for it.

How do I remove vocals from a song, an MP3 or a video?

Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes: Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android, nothing to install. A phone is slower than a computer (about 0.7x real time with a graphics chip in our measurements), so a 3-minute song takes about 4½ minutes. The iPhone guide below goes step by step.
Can I remove the words from a song and keep the music?
Yes, that's what the instrumental is: the singing, words and all, is taken out and the music stays. It works on an MP3 or any other song file as well as a video, so you can remove the lyrics from an MP3 the same way. It takes out the whole vocal, not single words: to cut one word or line, trim around it instead.
Is the instrumental clean enough for karaoke?
On most well-mixed songs, yes. Faint traces of the voice can remain where it's very loud or drenched in reverb, so listen before you download. You can also download the vocals on their own to check what was taken out.
